Peanut Butter Addicts!

Have you ever caught yourself suddenly eating something you normally wouldn’t as you never acquired a taste for it growing up or you just forgot about it all together? Then BAM! Your licking the spoon while making PB & J for your child (or yourself – yes there are ways to stay young besides drinking diet pepsi) and something got triggered!
I find this happens with fitness enthusiasts as well, especially ones that diet very hard for extended periods of time. Whenever you get the chance to have something that is sweet & sometimes salty you turn to your little brown, smooth or chunky friend.

This is the case with myself, after competing in my first 2 fitness shows back in 2006-2007 I became a peanut butter addict, I cleaned my act up slightly when I moved to Natural but adding it to everything I possibly could was still a big issue & still is at times. Now in moderation natural/organic peanut butter is fine to have incorporated into your diet but there are optimum times when this source of fat is best which will be explained later. Now I have tried cashew, almond and everything else possible but nothing compares to regular old peanuts for me. So there are definitely times where I will take the plunge and purchase a different type just to keep my consumption down. There have also been times where I have put the jar in the freezer or ate so much of it throughout the day that I put myself in a peanut butter coma! But still days later I am back at it and can’t get enough!

After talking to others with the same problem and reading others pages on the subject I have came to the conclusion that: If you can limit the amount by incorporating it into shakes or other foods such as celery or an apple you will get a much more filling sensation. But you need to eat the natural/organic type (you should know why) no fake stuff! And once you have your servings do NOT leave the jar out lingering as you will just continue eating it further. If eating it is almost life threatening as you are gaining too much weight, you need to remove it from your life! Refrain from buying it obviously, which is easier said than done. Often if you live with others get them to hide it from you and not eat it when you’re around.

One thing I have done for awhile now to avoid the high levels of fat and calories in nut butters is to just buy a big bag of unsalted natural nuts “in” the shell. This way you have to take the time to break them open and actually work for your food, so by the time you eat 20-30 you feel slightly fuller or just annoyed! LOL You can always make your own nut butters as well in a blender and a little olive oil which is fairly easy and won’t leave you with a whole jar staring at you when you finish (unless of course you blend the whole bag!). Are you a FRUIT gainer?

I hear from many people as well as new clients that complain that they eat super healthy all day but for some reason they cannot lose the extra weight hanging on for dear life to their hips, stomach and thighs. Fresh fruit is an excellent source of vitamins & minerals (not to mention tastes amazing) BUT just like most things in life too much of a good thing is never beneficial.

Most fruits average 15-20 kcal per ounce. . . so if you are having 8-10 ounces along with your breakfast, another 8-10 in your shake or smoothie, then end your day with another serving you are not doing your body justice. Now here is where it becomes even more complicated, not only did you eat the aforementioned fruit, you delved deeply in the fridge for before bed and chose to drink the fruit juice over which had over 30 grams of sugar and 300 calories -over- the H2izzle. BIG mistake! You are now basically slapping fat onto those love handles even more then you thought imaginable. Most people dream but guess what, running in your mind when you’re sleeping aint gunna burn off everything you just inhaled. As most people in North America do not drink -or- eat the recommended serving size to start with! If you suffer from the above scenario then you are more than likely a victim of being a FRUIT gainer.

So my recommendation for those wanting to lose the extra FRUIT gainer weight is to start by limiting your fruit consumption to half your current amount, and adjust as you see fit once progress is sustainable and maintainable. Many people do not realize what an actual serving size looks like which is what leads to the weight gain, one serving of fruit varies but is approximate to ½ cup. So the KEY of this whole post is to really pay attention to your portions. And this isn’t only limited to fruit, next time you decide to eat something good or bad take a look at the actual portion given on the nutrition label (pictured below) and the calories and nutrition breakdown, then compare it to the amount you would normally consume.

In addition, for FRUIT gainer weight loss, I would stick with fresh or frozen fruit only. Skip the fruit juice, fruit cups and dried fruit, all of which are more calorically dense, much lower in fiber and easier to over-consume. Although the sugar in fruit, known as fructose, is healthier than refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup, it still contains the same number of calories per serving (4 calories per gram) so again, it cannot be consumed in unlimited quantities if your goal is trying to lose weight.

Lemon or Lime. . .

Lemon Juice is more alkaline than lime juice!. .But I read Lime juice is more alkaline than lemon juice! Does it really matter?! They are both excellent sources of vitamin C, B6, potassium, folic acid, flavonoids and the outstanding phytochemical, limonene so mix it up.

Now if the only time you have had a lemon or lime was when it was hanging off your glass in a night club, then you will definitely get something out of reading this post!

Now besides aiding in asthma, burning feet/soles, cold, constipation, swollen gums, heartburn, inflammatory disorders, dry skin & sore throat to name a few! I am focusing on how these two fruits can aid in weight loss just by starting off your day with a squeeze in your warm or cold water. The warm lemon/lime water helps purify and stimulate the liver while liquefying bile and inhibiting excess bile flow. It also helps the bowels eliminate more freely and natural and ups your potassium levels significantly. Lemon/lime water has an alkalizing effect in the body as it is buffered. Even if you drink it just before a meal, it will help your body maintain a higher pH than if you didn’t drink it. The higher or more alkaline your pH, the more your inner terrain is resistant to minor and major disease.

And don’t forget you can always add the juice to foods such as fish, salads, meat, & beans to name a few, this is a much healthier option to cook with rather than using sauces or oils.

So next time your in the grocery store don’t be afraid to pick up a few of these yellow or green metabolism boosters! Your heart (among other things) will literally thank-you!

Selection and Storage

Look for firm, unblemished fruit that’s heavy for its size — an indicator of juiciness. Thin-skinned fruit yield the most juice. Refrigerated, they keep for a month or two. Lemons will even keep for a week or two at room temperature, but limes must be refrigerated. Lemon varieties vary mostly in their skin thickness, juiciness, and number of seeds.
